What is the Federal Skilled Trades Program?

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is designed for skilled tradespeople who want to become permanent residents of Canada. It is managed through the Express Entry system, providing an efficient pathway to permanent residency for qualified individuals in various trades.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the FSTP, you must meet the following criteria:

Work Experience

At least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the last five years.

Language Proficiency

Achieve a minimum score of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in speaking and listening, and CLB 4 in reading and writing in English or French.

Education

Formal education is not required, but having an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) can improve your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

Job Offer or Certification

Have a valid job offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least one year or a certificate of qualification in your skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority.

How to Apply

  1. Create an Express Entry Profile: Provide information about your skills, work experience, education, and language abilities.

  2. Receive CRS Score: Your profile is ranked based on your CRS score.

  3. Get an ITA: If you score highly, you’ll receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residency.

  4. Submit Application: Complete and submit your application within 60 days, including all required documents.
